Just southeast of Santa Fe, Eldorado at Santa Fe is a planned community known for its expansive high-desert landscape, distinctive passive-solar homes and strong sense of community. The land that became Eldorado was once part of a large working cattle ranch, with a history extending back to the 18th-century Cañada de los Álamos land grant. The Simpson family operated the ranch until the late 1960s, when the property was sold for residential development.

The first Eldorado lots were offered for sale in 1972, marking the beginning of one of Santa Fe County's most significant planned communities.

Eldorado was conceived during the energy-conscious era of the 1970s, with an emphasis on environmentally responsive design. Many of the community's early homes incorporated passive-solar principles, including south-facing windows, thermal mass and designs oriented toward the sun.
