Historic East Side

Just east of the Santa Fe Plaza, the Historic East Side is one of the city's oldest and most cherished residential neighborhoods. Defined by adobe homes, winding lanes, mature gardens and historic compounds, it offers an extraordinary sense of place within walking distance of the Plaza, Canyon Road and Santa Fe's cultural heart.

The East Side grew along the old Camino Real, the historic route connecting Santa Fe with Mexico City. Spanish settlers established homes and agricultural properties here beginning in the early 17th century, while the area remained closely connected to Indigenous communities and the acequia system. Many of the neighborhood's streets and property boundaries follow patterns established generations ago.

The Historic East Side is renowned for its adobe architecture, traditional courtyards, vigas, bancos and portal-covered outdoor spaces. Homes range from modest historic adobes to expansive multi-generational compounds and carefully restored residences. Rather than a uniform architectural style, the neighborhood reflects centuries of evolution—from Spanish Colonial and Territorial traditions to the establishment of Santa Fe's regional architecture in the early 20th century.

The neighborhood's eastern edge is home to Canyon Road, one of Santa Fe's most celebrated art destinations. What began as a residential lane evolved into a nationally recognized gallery district, with historic adobe buildings now housing galleries, studios, restaurants and boutiques. The proximity to Canyon Road has helped make the East Side a natural home for artists, collectors and those drawn to Santa Fe's creative culture.

Today, the neighborhood is prized for its walkability, historic character, mature landscaping and proximity to Santa Fe's cultural attractions. Residents can walk to the Plaza, Canyon Road, the Santa Fe River and many of the city's most celebrated restaurants and galleries. Real estate ranges from intimate historic adobes to sophisticated compounds with private courtyards, gardens and guest houses. Despite its central location, the neighborhood retains a remarkably quiet and private atmosphere.
