AN HISTORIC VILLAGE IN THE HEART OF THE GALISTEO BASIN
Just southeast of Santa Fe, Galisteo is a historic village surrounded by the sweeping high-desert landscape of the Galisteo Basin. Its story stretches back thousands of years and today blends Native history, Spanish colonial traditions, agriculture, art and rural living.
Long before the present-day village, the Galisteo Basin was home to numerous Pueblo communities, including the substantial Galisteo and San Cristóbal pueblos. The basin was also an important trade corridor connecting the Rio Grande Valley with the Great Plains.
The present-day village emerged in the early 19th century, when Spanish and Mexican-era settlers established homes and agricultural fields along Galisteo Creek. Traditional acequias, stone walls and long, narrow farming parcels remain visible in the surrounding landscape.
Many of Galisteo's distinctive adobe homes date from the 19th century, including those clustered around the historic village center. The Nuestra Señora de los Remedios church, built in 1884, remains one of the community's landmarks.
Galisteo's historic character was formally recognized in 1969, when the Galisteo Historic District was added to the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties.
Over time, the village also became a magnet for artists and craftspeople, drawn by its historic architecture, dramatic light and expansive landscape. Today, studios, galleries and events such as the Galisteo Studio Tour contribute to its creative identity.
The surrounding basin is an equally important part of the community's character. Grasslands, mesas, piñon-juniper woodlands and dramatic mountain views define the landscape, much of which has been protected from development. The Galisteo Basin Preserve provides miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding while protecting important natural and archaeological resources.
Today, Galisteo offers a distinctive rural Northern New Mexico lifestyle within easy reach of Santa Fe. Homes range from historic adobe properties in the village to contemporary residences and larger parcels throughout the surrounding countryside.
